Description
SK-N-MC cell originated from a 14-year-old girl in 1971. The original paper suggested it was from a supraorbital metastasis of neuroblastoma. However, many now believe that SK-N-MC arose from Askin's tumors associated with Ewing's sarcoma, a tumor that is morphologically similar to neuroblastoma. Studies have shown that there is a FLI1-EWS gene fusion in cells, which is the pathological change of Ewing's sarcoma and Askin's tumor. SK-N-MC are adherent fibroblast-like cells that grow in a monolayer. This cell line is a pseudodiploid female (XX) with a chromosome count in the diploid range. The modal chromosome number of SK-N-MC is 46. Its normal chromosomes N3 and N10 are absent, and the N8 chromosome is usually a tetrasomy. SK-N-MC cells exhibit an epithelial cell type and are neuroblastoma cells, making them useful in brain cancer-related research. The increased cholinergic activity of the SK-N-MC neuroblastoma cell line relative to other NB cell lines, combined with its tumorigenicity, makes it a powerful research tool. CD BioSciences offers a transfection kit for the SK-N-MC cell line.
