Description

In the beginning, the bone marrow of a 53-year-old female patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) was used to create the K-562 cell line. These cells are frequently employed as a model system for research into the biology of cancer, gene control, and hematopoiesis. K562 cells are a useful tool for researching erythroid differentiation because of their unique ability to develop into erythrocytes in response to certain stimuli, such as hemin or sodium butyrate. For many reasons, K562 cells are frequently used in scientific study. First of all, they may be grown in vast quantities and are simple to maintain in cultivation. Second, they are a valuable model for researching chromosomal anomalies in leukemia due to their relatively straightforward karyotype. Thirdly, they have high levels of certain transcription factors, such as GATA-1 and NF-E2, which are crucial erythropoiesis regulators. K562 cell research has greatly advanced our knowledge of the molecular processes underpinning erythroid differentiation and leukemia formation. K562 cells have also been used to examine how various medications affect leukemia cells and to evaluate the effectiveness of potential medication options against leukemia.
