Chronic renal failure, a disease in which kidney function is lost over time, is recognized as a concern in clinical treatment worldwide. The development of new and innovative therapies often depends on preclinical research into the etiology of disease. The BHK-21 cell line was established in 1961 from 1-day-old healthy golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) kidneys. This cell line exhibits a fibroblastic morphology. These cells are susceptible to infection by viruses such as human adenovirus, poliovirus, and reovirus. BHK-21 cells can be transfected in vitro to facilitate the study of mammalian kidney cell biology. In order to facilitate in-depth research, a specific and efficient cell transfection system is essential.
