Xylans are a group of hemicellulose present in the cell walls of plants and can also be found in some algae (green and red). Xylan is a polysaccharide whose skeleton is composed of -1, 4-linked xylan residues. This main chain can be replaced by side chains of arabinosyl, glucuronic, and 4-o-methylglucuronic residues, and can also be further modified by acetyl substitution on the hydroxyl group of xylose residues.
