Agarose bound villus lectins are prepared using our affinity purified lectins. This lectin is a family of tetramer glycoproteins consisting of a combination of A and B subunits with a structure similar to that of PHA and GSLi. In our preparation, the main isolates appear to be rich in B subunits. VVL prioritises the recognition of α- or β-linked terminal N-acetylgalactosamine, particularly individual α-n-acetylgalactosamine residues linked to serine or threonine in the polypeptide (Tn antigen).
