European larkspur lectin (UEA I) is isolated and purified from larkspur seeds by affinity chromatography. It consists of two subunits. Lectin is a glycoprotein with no mitogenic activity for O-erythrocyte agglutination and less activity for A2-erythrocyte agglutination.UEA I is associated with (1,2)-linked focal residues reacts strongly with (1,3) or (1,6)-linked foci react poorly or not at all.UEA I does not bind to the internal focus structure, and the presence of an internal (1,3)-linked focus on the H 2-type oligosaccharides reduces the affinity of the lectin for this blood group antigen by a factor of 3.UEA I has been used as a marker for the vascular endothelium and is used to identify endothelial cells in benign vascular lesions more specifically than antibodies.UEA I-coated magnetic beads have been used to isolate endothelium-associated microvessels for subsequent cell culture. This lectin has also been used to distinguish angiosarcomas from epithelial tumors.
