SppA1 is a serine-type protease that exists in the thylakoid membrane of photosynthetic organisms. The SppA protease family is represented by one component in higher plants and by two proteins (SppA1 and SppA2) in most cyanobacteria. SppA1 is a light-induced protease, which may be involved in the domestication of light by photosynthetic membranes. In cyanobacteria, SppA1 is involved in the degradation of phycobilisome antenna connexin under high light conditions.
