Black Sambucus nigra lectin (SNA/EBL I) is isolated from the bark of elderberry and purified by affinity chromatography. SNA I is a type 2 ribosome inactivated protein, consisting of an enzyme-active A chain and a carbohydrate-binding b chain. Low concentration of NSNA I can induce apoptosis through caspase-dependent pathway. This effect depends on the carbohydrate binding of the b chain and is independent of the catalytic activity of the a chain.
