Description

Peroxidoredotoxins (EC=1.11.1.15) belong to a family of enzymes that are common in all biological kingdoms. prxq enzyme that acts by reducing hydroperoxides. Unlike other peroxidase enzymes, peroxidase does not have a heme group, but uses cysteine residues and REDOX active sulfhydryl groups to exert its enzymatic activity. The ability of peroxide-detoxifying toxins to hydrolyze hydroperoxides suggests that this family of proteins has a general function in oxidative defense.
