Affinity-purified Pisum sativum lectin or lectin (PSA) is a heterodimer consisting of four subunits. It is carbohydrate specific for oligosaccharides containing α-linked mannose. Its hemagglutinating activity is inhibited by glucose, mannose and sucrose. It has no blood group specificity. The n-terminal sequence of this lectin has some homology with lectins from other legumes.Pisum sativum lectin also shows mitogenic effects on mouse splenocytes and inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase activity.PSA is commonly used to differentiate between virus-transformed normal cells. Activity requires calcium and manganese ions.
