Description

Purified Phaseolus vulgaris lectin (Purified Phaseolus vulgaris lectin, PHA E+L, also known as PHA P, P stands for plant hemagglutinin) is a separated lectin composed of two isolated lectins, PHA-E and PHA-L, respectively, red lectin and leukocyte lectin. They all have strong mitotic activity. PHA P has a molecular weight of 126,000 and an isoelectric point between pH 5.2 and pH 6.2. It is carbohydrate-specific for eluents of complex oligosaccharides and bovine thyroglobulin or acetic acid. This lectin causes blood group A (-SA) to agglutinate. PHA P can be used to stimulate mitosis of human lymphocytes. It has the potential to induce closer contact between adjacent cell membranes and has been successfully used for membrane-induced fusion of human oocytes, bovine oocytes, and goat oocytes. Phytohemagglutinin is direct evidence of the involvement of bacterial lectins in the initiation of infection and is the basis of current academic and industrial attempts to apply carbohydrates to the anti-adhesion treatment of such diseases.
