Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase; EC 4.1.1.31) is an important regulator of photosynthetic carbon metabolism in C4 and CAM plants. This is the first enzyme in this pathway, the PEPC enzyme, which is encoded by a small polygenic family. Several subtypes of PEPC have been found in corn, sorghum and sugar cane. These isomers are involved in a variety of functions such as initial fixation of atmospheric CO2 (= C4 PEPC) and outcross functions associated with nitrogen assimilation or amino acid biosynthesis (Lepiniec et al. 1994).
