NPL, isolated from daffodil bulbs, is specific for alpha-linked mannose, preferring polymannose structures containing (alpha-1,6) bonds. Binding to the mannose polymer can occur through internal mannose residues and does not depend on the structural integrity of the non-reducing end sugars. NPL also binds some galactomannan and differs in other binding properties from the related lectin Galanthus nivalis lectin. Unlike Con A, LCA, or PSA, NPL does not bind glucose.
