Calla lily lectin (MPA/MPL) is a tetramer plant protein purified by affinity chromatography. MPA has a molecular weight of about 44,000 and is composed of four subunits. It has an isoelectric point between pH 4.8 and pH 5.3 and is blood group specific for A, B, and O (-SA). This lectin is effective against tumor-associated T-antigen disaccharides (Gal 1,3 galnac) It has high affinity for many O-chain glycopeptide structures. Gal Structures of 1,3 appear on the surface of tumor cells as markers of mucus-associated antigens, called t antigens. It is also a central element of the O-chain glycopeptide structure on other mammalian glycoproteins.
