This lectin appears to bind only O-glucosid-linked oligosaccharides, preferring the structure of galactose (β-1,3) n-acetylgalactosamine. This structure (t antigen) is a peanut lectin (PNA) -bound oligosaccharide. However, unlike PNA, Jacalin can bind single or double bonded forms of this structure. This lectin has been used to purify human IgA. The specificity of this lectin also provides an opportunity to locate or isolate glycoproteins with oligosaccharide side chains that have O-glycoside connections.
