IRT1 is a high-affinity iron transporter that plays a key role in iron absorption (through the plasma membrane of the root epidermis in the rhizosphere) and mediates heavy metal absorption in iron-deficient conditions. It is the main regulator of iron homeostasis in plants. Synonyms: Iron (2+) transporter 1, iron (II) transporter 1.
