Histone is the main component of chromosome protein in eukaryotic cells. They are rich in the amino acids arginine and lysine, which have been highly conserved during evolution. Histones wrap DNA into tight clumps of chromatin. The two core histones of each class H2A, H2B, H3 and H4 are assembled and wrapped by 146 base pairs of DNA to form an octamer nucleosome. Histone tails undergo many post-translational modifications that directly or indirectly alter chromatin structure, promote transcriptional activation or inhibition, or other nuclear processes. Methylation of histone H3K4 is associated with activation of gene transcription.
