Histones are the basic nuclear proteins responsible for the fibrous nucleosome structure of eukaryotes. The structure consists of about 146 bp of DNA wrapped around a nucleosome, an octamer made up of each pair of four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). Through the DNA interaction between the linking histone H1 and the nucleosome, the chromatin fibers are further compact and form higher order chromatin structures.
