Description

Gamma-glutamylcysteine synthase (gamma-ECS) (EC 6.3.2.2) catalyzes the first step in glutathione (GSH) synthesis, producing gamma-glutamylcysteine (gamma-EC) from L-glutamic acid and cysteine. In the second step, glycine is added to the C-terminal of (gamma-EC) under the catalysis of GSH-S. Glutathione is the main non-protein mercaptan, which acts as an antioxidant in the stress response and acts as a mobile pool to reduce sulfur. It is also important in regulating plant growth and development.
