Ferridoxin is an iron-thionein that transfers electrons in a variety of metabolic reactions. Higher plants also have significantly different genes, but have not yet characterized the Fd protein, with extended C-terminus (FdCs). Whether these FdC proteins function as photosynthetic electron transfer proteins is unknown. Studies have shown that FdC1 has a specific function under the acceptor constraints of PSI and directs electrons away from NADP(+) photoreduction.
