Glutaminoxy-glutarate aminotransferase (GOGAT) is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of glutamate from glutamine and alpha-ketoglutarate. There are two forms of GOGAT in plants: ferridoxin dependent GOGAT (Fd-GOGAT) and NADH-dependent GOGAT (NADH-GOGAT). 95% of GOGAT in plants are Fd-GOGAT type. Fd-GOGAT is encoded in Arabidopsis by two genes, glu1 and glu2. Fd-GOGAT(both forms) is highly conserved in plants, red algae and cyanobacteria. Ferridoxin dependent glutamate synthetase (Fd-GOGAT) is involved in the biosynthesis of glutamate in leaves. This protein is necessary for the re-assimilation of ammonium ions produced during photorespiration. The gene name is GlsF.
