Cas9 (CRISPR-Associated endonucase 9) is an RNA-directed DNA endonucase associated with the clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) type II adaptive immune system. CRISPR clusters are transcribed and processed into CRISPR RNA (crRNA). Cas9 protein is used as a genomic engineering tool to induce site-directed double-strand breaks in DNA.
