Cas9 (CRISPR-associated endonuclease 9) is an RNA-directed DNA endonase associated with the clustered regularly interspersed Short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) type II adaptive immune system. CRISPR clusters are transcribed and processed into CRISPR RNA (crRNA), and Cas9 proteins are used as genomic engineering tools to induce site-directed double-strand breaks in DNA.
