The binding specificity of Wisteria floribunda lectin (WFL) is not fully understood, but the lectin appears to preferentially bind alpha or beta linked with n-acetylgalactosamine to the carbohydrate structure of position 3 or 6 of galactose. This lectin has been used to separate lymphocyte populations and, while not mitotic, can induce lymphokine production in mouse spleen cells.
