5-methylol cytosine is a recently discovered DNA modification resulting from the conversion of 5-methylcytosine to 5-methylol cytosine by the TET oxygenase family. It may have an important role different from 5-methylcytosine (5-mC). The 5-hmC bases have been found in Purkinje neurons, granulosa cells, and embryonic stem cells, and they are present in Purkinje cells at high levels (up to 0.6% of the total nucleotides in Purkinje cells).
