This enzyme converts phytoene into zeta-carotene via the intermediary of phytofluene by the symmetrical introduction of two double bonds at the C-11 and C-11' positions of phytoene. The favored substrate is 15-cis-phytoene. The zeta-carotene produced has a central C15-C15' double bond in the cis configuration and it requires isomerization before being recognized as substrate by ZDS, the next enzyme in the lycopene biosynthesis pathway.
